What you can do

UPDATE: Student walkout planned for May 10 at 11:15 a.m. Get full details on press conference and walkout here.

We'll have some specific action steps you can take soon, such as rallies, walkouts, etc. In the meantime, write a letter about how this affects you, why it is important that the contract gets settled, etc. and send it to your city council, mayor, state legislators, the governor, etc. as well as to the MHCC Board of Education and to Dr. Ski and Dr. Hay. We have to keep up the pressure on the board as well as get elected officials that represent the area to contact the board and encourage them to get this settled as well.

Here is an example of something you could write. We encourage you putting it into your own words, though, so that the letter is personal.

"My name is _______, and I am a registered voter living in _______ . I respectfully, request that you become personally involved in the current labor dispute at Mt. Hood Community College. I believe the Board of Directors are not serving the community nor the faculty in a fair and equitable manner. I believe the current actions of the Board of Directors will have long term negative impact on the citizens of Oregon and the business interests of the community and the local economy."

Use whatever words you are comfortable with, but always be polite and respectful. If you appear too angry or too irrational they will likely disregard your input.

If you write something out ahead of time then you can simply cut and paste thus saving yourself some time. If you choose phone calls, having something written in front of you can get you past any nervousness you might have.

There are 3 main websites to use to contact these people.

Statewide officials: http://www.oregon.gov/menutopic/elected_officials.shtml

Here you will find contact information for Governor John Kitzhaber, the Commissioner of Labor and Industries Brad Avakian, the Superintendent of Public Instruction Susan Castillo.

If you click on Governor John Kitzhaber it takes you to http://governor.oregon.gov/Gov/contact.shtml. From here it takes you to a form in which you can send him a message. He will get it. Remember that elected officials (and their staff) collect lots of statistics. If they detect a large number of people making that extra effort to bring something to their attention it becomes significant to them.

Oregon legislature: The second website is http://www.leg.state.or.us/

When you go there things become very simple. On the right hand border you can select either "Find Your Legislator" which will ask you for your address and then print their contact info or you can select "Write Your Legislator" which will take your message and automatically send it to your Federal and State legislators.

The last website is for your county. Depending on which county you live in, it would be one of the following:

Multnomah County: http://www.co.multnomah.or.us/dbcs/elections/election_information/list_of_mult_metro.shtml
Clackamas County: http://www.clackamas.us/elections/localofficials.jsp
Hood River County:
City of Cascade Locks

All the phone numbers and websites are listed there.

And then there's the media. I suggest you go to this website: http://www.620kpoj.com/pages/contact/index.php

Here you will find contact information for Carl Wolfson (who had coverage on his Friday show), Thom Hartmann who is nationally syndicated and has lived in Oregon and Ed Schulz. Ask all of these folks to bring national attention to this issue.

The bottom line here is simple...make a big stink about this and get all your family and friends to do the same. In the end it's all about the number of contacts these people receive.
