Teachers at Mount Hood Community College are frustrated they still have not reached a contract deal yet, voting to authorize their union to set a strike date.

TROUTDALE, Ore. - Teachers at Mount Hood Community College are frustrated they still have not reached a contract deal yet, voting to authorize their union to set a strike date.

The vote does not put the faculty on strike. It triggers a process where the school administration has 10 days to return to the bargaining table. Failure to negotiate a settlement then would lead to a strike.

Mt. Hood Community College's Faculty Association voted Wednesday evening to authorize a strike against the school.

Association officials said 90 percent of association members authorized the union's executive team to set a strike date if negotiations continued to sputter and failed to produce an agreement.

On Wednesday, April 6, the Faculty Association will meet at 5:30 p.m. at Mt. Hood Community College and vote on whether to authorize a strike, as contract negotiations have reached a stalemate, said Sara Williams, the association's bargaining chairwoman.

If the union chooses to strike, it must give the college 10 days notice that it intends to do so, Williams added.

GRESHAM, Ore. - Mt. Hood Community College teachers filed out of the Visual Arts Theater on campus after about 90 percent voted to authorize a strike. The teachers carried black sheets, which were placed on their doors, signifying dark times on campus.

Students, faculty and staff members are scheduled to rally in support of the full-time faculty Thursday afternoon at Mt. Hood Community College.

The rally, which will start at 4:30 p.m. in the main mall area, comes one day after the full-time faculty voted to authorize a strike.

On Thursday, April 7th, a rally will be held at Mt. Hood Community College in support of instruction at the school. Over the past several months, major cuts have been made that affect instruction and the education of students at MHCC. At the same time, additional administrators have been hired, $310,000 has been approved to redesign and rebrand the school's web site, and a consultant hired to handle contract negotiations and other labor/hiring issues.

Support for the MHCC Full-time Faculty Association was shown by students Thursday afternoon in the Main Mall as they gathered to rally and obtain signatures on a petition documenting their position.

Jenni Simonis, an MHCC student and one of the main organizers of the rally, said the main goal is to prevent a faculty strike and for compromises to be made on both sides in order to reach an agreement.
